Manuscript writing

Do not underestimate the time requested to write a manuscript that can be sent to referees, ideally start the manuscript about 6 months prior to the end of the phD.

By law, the authorization of defense is proposed by the supervisor.

Doctoral students are strongly encouraged to submit publications before their thesis defense. However, a minimum number of publications before defense is not required at the level of ED 397.

Manuscript can be written in english but requires an extended summary of 5-10 p in french

The manuscript can be written "on articles" if these are already published or submitted, in this case a minimum of three articles published or submitted in international peer-reviewed journals is required, the doctoral student must be the first author. The manuscript must include a chapter describing the state of the art, a chapter describing the methods, as well as an introduction for each article and must present in a synthetic way the main results obtained and the perspectives of the research work.

Additionnal regulation at ED397 apply :

The doctoral student's work is examined by at least two HDR tenured reviewers for reviewers affiliated with French institutions or with at least ten years of research experience after their doctorate for reviewers affiliated with foreign institutions. They must be external to the doctoral school and the doctoral student's registration institution, not have any involvement in the doctoral student's work and must not have published with the thesis director and any co-supervisors in the 5 years preceding the defence.

The external member of the individual monitoring committee (CSI) can not be reviewer, examiner is allowed

In the case of a doctoral student from a laboratory with both SU and PSL supervision, an external member cannot be affiliated with a laboratory with at least one of these supervisions.

A professor emeritus can be external reviewer but loses the quality of professor
